    2014全球財經新聞專業學生譚宗洋畢業典禮致辭

Dear graduates, dear faculty: Thank you for having me back in our GBJ family.

My name is Stephen Tan, Chinese name Tan Zongyang. Four years ago, I graduated from the school, among the first batch of Global Business Journalism students. Now I work for Bloomberg News, a global news organization focuses on business reporting. I think I’m a good practitioner of what I’ve learnt from the program, and that’s the reason I had the honor to be back today.

As a graduate who has 4-year working experience, I would like to share 3 tips that may help you in your upcoming career and life. They are very small and simple things, which are: pick up your hobby; keep fit; don’t eat alone. I will explain one by one.

Most of you will start your first job. What you may find different from school life is, you have less free time and usually get tired at work, if you work hard. Work is like gravity - which drags people down on earth, but it is your interest, your hobby that gives you a moment to fly free in the sky. A hobby could be cooking, free-lancer, blogging. It can be anything that you persist doing, entertains you, and distinguishes you from the others. That’s why I suggest you to develop a hobby. It can build your character and make you unique. Uniqueness is very important in career. I will give you a real example.

When I worked in China Daily newspaper as my first job, there is a girl in my team, who works so-so and doesn’t speak much - in one word, mediocre performance. Once I had lunch with her and we talked about hobbies. She said she is not good at sports or playing music instrument. The only thing she likes to do is housekeeping. Yes you hear me, housekeeping. Not something really cool right? Because of the hobby, she always kept her work table clean and tidy, You can imagine what a work table usually looks like, especially for journalists - a disaster like post-war battlefield. Then some day, the big boss of the newspaper came to the office for spot check. When he passed by her table, he was like finding a new continent - with mouth and eyes big open. After a few seconds he started to speak, ``this table should be an example of our danwei - the Chinese word of workplace’’. So she turned out to be the only person in the team that the big shot remembered her name. Is that really matter? A small hobby like that. But what she kept doing makes her unique . For many of you, I think you are more talented - singing, dancing. After work, just give yourself some free time to do things you really like.

Second tip. keep fit. It’s never too late to start exercise. Good health is the cornerstone of one’s success - you need it to overcome difficulties and also enjoy life. It’s an art of living that someone can balance life and work well. There are plenty of examples, some investment bankers in my office building do workout during lunch break; Steve Jobs is a yoga fans; Wang Shi, Chairman of China’s largest property developer Vanke, is a mountain climber who conquered Mt. Everest at his fifties. People have wrong conception that doing exercise make you tired. Instead, it’s a refreshment and help your work more efficiently. I created a theory by myself: because we urban people do most sports in brain, we need physical exercise as balance. No matter how busy your work is, don’t forget to take care of your health.

Last but not least. Reach out to colleagues, friends or even strangers for lunch or dinner. People always talk about how important networking is, but a few of them take actions. Networking is not something sophisticated such as your mannerism at a cocktail, it could be as simple as eating together. If you target eating with one person you’re not familiar with each week, then after four years, you would have known more than 200 people well, and some of them may become your new clients, business partner, or simply friends. For those who are not good at public speaking, dinning provides a relaxed moment that makes you feel ease at communication.

After sharing the tips, I would like to congratulate on your graduation. I know exactly how everyone feel at the moment: happy, of course, brand new life is waving to you; a little bit worried, maybe, as future is uncertain. Please keep the feelings at the moment, as well as your ambitions and aspirations in your memory - because no matter how far you shall go in the future, don’t forget where you start, and why you start. Wish you all have a bright, prosperous future.

      Thank you.
