A Feminist Interpretation of Desire Under The Elms
Abstract
Eugene ONeill was the founder of American modern theater. His plays are usually identifiable with the real life and abound in philosophical meanings. Desire Under the Elms truly expresses how the awakening of female self-consciousness’s happens awaken as time goes on. In the portrayal of female characters, O’Neill is very sympathetic to women and describes their broken psychology, hurtful feelings and sufferings as victims of the masculine society. This thesis attempts to study the heroine’s strong character and unique personality as seen in her revolt against traditional moral standards conventions as well as her love entanglement. The study is conducted in the perspective of feminist criticism, and the thesis reveals the heroine’s rebellion and fighting against the society with patriarchal ideology. It demonstrates that women should have their own self-consciousness, if they want to possess their dignity and realize their own value.

摘 要
奧尼爾是美國(guó)現(xiàn)代戲劇的奠基人,其劇作往往貼近生活并且哲理深刻.在《榆樹(shù)下的欲望》1劇中，他真實(shí)地表現(xiàn)女性的自我意識(shí)隨著時(shí)間的變化而覺(jué)醒的過(guò)程。在女性人物描寫(xiě)時(shí)，他非常同情女性，描述出她們殘破的心理和受挫的感情，以及作為男權(quán)社會(huì)犧牲品的痛苦。本文主要通過(guò)女主人公對(duì)傳統(tǒng)父權(quán)意識(shí)形態(tài)下的倫理道德和信仰的反叛與對(duì)立以及她的感情糾葛，探討了女主人公堅(jiān)強(qiáng)的品質(zhì)和獨(dú)特的個(gè)性。用女權(quán)主義批評(píng)理論來(lái)解讀女主人形象，揭示女主人公對(duì)父權(quán)意識(shí)形態(tài)社會(huì)的反叛和抗?fàn)帯ＷC明女性首先得擁有自我意識(shí)才能夠擁有自己的尊嚴(yán)，從而實(shí)現(xiàn)自我的價(jià)值。
