Their voyage across the Atlantic Ocean was difficult. Their first months in America were difficult, too. About one hundred Pilgrims landed just as autumn was turning to winter. During the cold months that followed, about half of them died.

為什么要在感恩節(jié)食用火雞呢。這要從感恩節(jié)的由來說起。1620年，英國一批主張改革的清教徒，因理想和抱負(fù)不能實(shí)現(xiàn)而退出國教，自立新教，此舉激起了英國當(dāng)政者的仇恨。
這些清教徒們不堪承受統(tǒng)治者的迫害和歧視，先逃到荷蘭，9月初，乘船遠(yuǎn)渡重洋，準(zhǔn)備流亡美國。
船在波濤洶涌的大海中漂泊了65天，于11月終于到達(dá)了美國東海岸，在羅得島州的普羅維斯敦港登陸。當(dāng)時，此處還是一片荒涼未開墾的處女地，火雞和其他野生動物隨處可見。
時值寒冬，來到陌生的地方，缺衣少食，惡劣的環(huán)境正在威脅著他們的生命。在這生死攸關(guān)的時刻，當(dāng)?shù)氐挠〉诎踩藶樗麄儙チ耸澄�、生活用品和生產(chǎn)工具，并幫助他們建立了自己的新家園。

此后，每年11月第四個星期四都要舉行這樣的慶祝活動，除招待印第安人食烤火雞外，并在一起瘵辦射箭、跑步、摔跤等體育競賽，夜晚還圍著篝火盡情歌舞，共享歡樂。
另外有一種說法是這樣的，在16世紀(jì)某一年的收獲節(jié)上，英國的伊麗莎白女王正在吃烤鵝。這時傳來消息說，西班牙的無敵艦隊(SpanishArmada)在前往攻擊她心愛的英國途中沉沒了，女王高興不已，于是又要了一只鵝來慶祝這一捷報。因此鵝也就成了英國豐收季節(jié)的愛鳥。
當(dāng)清教徒們從英國來到美國時，烤火雞代替烤鵝成了主要菜肴，因?yàn)楸泵来箨懟痣u數(shù)量更為豐富，比鵝更容易找到。
