Personal statement for Surgical Pathology FellowshipSijiu shen, M .D., Ph.D My broad educational and research background in medicine, biochemistry, molecular biology, and rigorous residency training in pathology have prepared me for my decision to focus on surgical pathology, the biggest career decision in my professional life so far. Eight years of intense basic training in medicine at Tongji Medical University---one of the most prestigious in China---has laid a strong foundation for me to pursue an exciting career in medicine. Working on my Ph.D in biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University ofTexas Houston Health Science Center not only deepened my understanding of medicine and enabled me to master new research technologies and methodologies, but also exposed me to new challenges and possibilities in the field of medicine. However, my experience as a resident in pathology at Penn State University’s Hershey Medical Center has been the most rewarding and satisfying so far. The most exciting part of my experience is being able to diagnose diseases and help cure seriously ill patient. In addition, this is a field where I can combine my passion in teaching, research, and clinical work in one exciting career. My career goal is to become an outstanding professor, researcher and clinical practitioner in pathology. With this goal in mind, I have worked diligently not only to acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills in both anatomic and clinical pathology, but also develop management, teaching, and leadership skills. At the same, I have been actively involved in clinical research projects. While I am interested in many areas of pathology病理學(xué), practice of surgical pathology is particularly appealing to me. I feel that although morphological diagnosis is still the basis for and the most important aspect of diagnosis surgical pathology, ancillary techniques(including immunohistochemistry,免疫組織化學(xué) flow cytometry ,cytogenetics細(xì)胞遺傳學(xué) and molecular biology) are starting to play an increasingly important role in disease diagnosis. I am looking for a surgical pathology fellowship program, which will provide me the opportunities not only to expand and refine my morphological diagnostic skills, but also to pursue new research and clinical possibilities in ancillary studies in surgical pathology. It would be a plus if the program could also give me a strong cytopathology 細(xì)胞病理學(xué)exposure. The extent and depth of my medical education and research experience have been invaluable for my current residency training and will prove to be invaluable in my training as a surgical pathologist.
